Every HMT unit operates on a not-for-profit basis with financial surpluses used to support three key areas; the development of healthcare facilities, the funding of medical research and promoting health. Cycling plays a key role in the HMT health promotion initiative with view to improve long term activity levels and in turn reduce the increasing strain placed on the UK healthcare system through inactivity.
At HMT we believe that the promotion of health and exercise will help in the fight against sedentary lifestyles which place in increasing burden on the UK healthcare system.
With issues such as obesity placing an increasing strain on the UK healthcare system, we see the promotion of health and exercise as a vital part of supporting the future for a healthy nation.
The HMT Cycling Cycling Team serves to support talented athletes as part of a wider health awareness initiative designed to promote sport and exercise to all ages and abilities. Our cycle sport strategy and the HMT Cycling Team is bookended by our support of elite UK teams JLT-Condor and Polypipe Cycling, and community clubs with active youth coaching in Swansea and Grimsby in the communities our hospitals serve.
Our joined up approach in sport and exercise allows it to utilise support of world-class athletes to promote participation in sport and nurture the talent of ambitious young athletes. Our “Ride with the Pros” days run throughout the year from each hospital where recreational and club cyclists of any age or ability have the opportunity to ride alongside professional athletes and become a part of regular community rides.
We work with the organisers of events such as Sheffield GP, Pontefract GP and The Monsal Hill Climb whose events cater for all levels of cyclists, for example the Monsal Hill Climb could be the only event in the world where children and pensioners, men and women, can compete in the same event as professional World Tour riders.
The Trust believes that cycling as an exercise and recreational pursuit has many benefits for health and is a great form of low impact exercise for all ages and its long standing support of elite cycling provides an aspirational focus for diet, healthy weight maintenance and exercise, in particular for the young who the trust hope will follow the example of the elite athletes and establish the early habits of a good diet and regular exercise which will last a life time.
